When we bought our home, we knew the family room had great potential – it just needed a little love. The space felt dated, a bit cold, and lacked the depth and warmth we wanted for the room we spend the most time in together. We weren’t looking to do a full renovation or spend a fortune, but we did want to make a few intentional updates that would make the room feel more inviting.
The first thing we tackled was the ceiling light. The original fixture was outdated and didn’t add anything to the space, so replacing it instantly made the room feel more modern. From there, we focused on adding layers and warmth through decor (updating pillows, throw blankets, ottoman, artificial tree, etc.)
None of these updates were major or expensive, but together they made the room feel cozier, more intentional, and much more “us.” It’s amazing how a few small changes can transform a space without needing a full makeover. Here are a few things we purchased to help achieve the look.
Lighting fixture
- I wanted to choose something modern, but something that wouldn’t feel too ‘trendy’ either. I went with the black finish of this dimmable fixture.
Fireplace mantel
- The finish of this mantel was exactly what I was looking for and the quality is great for the price.
Area rug
- This rug is great with kids – it’s washable and durable and has not faded over time.
Blanket Ladder
- I found this great blanket ladder on Amazon, which I purchased in the brown color. It was easy to assemble!
Throw Blankets
- I was looking for specific color blankets to go with the room, but also wanted something that was good quality (consdering pets/kids). I did choose these sweater knit 70″x55″ throw blankets from Crate & Barrel. These blankets are under $150 each. For colors, I chose chestnut beige and cream white. (It is recommended to dry clean these, but I have been washing them on a delicate cycle and they have held up just fine!)
Couch pillows
- I did splurge a little on pillows because I wanted something that looked nice, but durable with kids (and washable).
- I ordered four covers from West Elm (you will need inserts too). I went with these pillow covers – 20×20 size, camel color.
- For the other four pillow covers (you will also need inserts for this too), I purchased these from Crate & Barrel – 20×20, sierra tan color.
Artificial tree
- I wanted something “natural” looking and this olive tree was recommended to me – it ended up being perfect!
Ottoman
- We are working with a smaller space, but I needed to add some seating options. I found the Auburn Ottoman (set of 2, color is velvet juniper) at West Elm.
Coffee Table
- I selected the 36″ Willow round coffee table from West Elm (color is cerused white).
Coffee table decor
- I’ve had my eye on a few coffee table books, but some are so expensive! I opted for these:
- For coasters, I opted for these simple, black coasters from Target. You can get a 4-pack for under $20.
- I wanted a little bit of a larger candle, and found one from Hearth & Hand (cream color, light scent – sea salt)
